Le nouveau spectacle du Musée Vivant du Cheval vous plonge à l’époque où le Tout-Paris se passionne pour les reines du cirque : les écuyères.
A l’aube du XXe siècle, ces femmes audacieuses osent alors se confronter aux hommes et au public en présentant des numéros équestres de haute-école, appris auprès des meilleurs écuyers.
Ecuyères vous entraîne dans les coulisses de la préparation d’un spectacle : ambiance, stress, querelles de divas rythment les numéros exécutés par les huit cavalières et les trente chevaux et poneys du Musée Vivant du Cheval.

Les grandes écuries ont été construites par l’architecte Jean Aubert à la demande de Louis-Henri de Bourbon, septième prince de Condé. La légende raconte qu’il pensait se réincarner en cheval et voulait, par conséquent, des écuries dignes de son rang. Il laissa à la France l’un des chefs-d’œuvre architecturaux du XVIIIe siècle.
Les écuries accueillaient à cette époque 240 chevaux et 500 chiens répartis en différentes meutes pour les chasses quotidiennes qui avaient lieu tout au long de l’année. Louis-Henri, si fier de cette architecture, organisait de somptueux dîners sous le dôme monumental de 28 mètres de hauteur. Louis XV, le futur tsar Paul Ier et Frédéric II de Prusse y soupèrent, accompagnés par les sonneries des trompes de chasse.
La Révolution française sonne le glas de cette époque princière mais les grandes écuries sont miraculeusement sauvées grâce à l’armée qui les occupe. Seules deux statues seront détruites pour utiliser leur plomb dans les baïonnettes : la statue et sa fontaine dans la Cour des chenils ainsi que la Renommée qui surplombait le dôme. Une copie de celle-ci fut reposée deux siècles plus tard en 1989 par Yves Bienaimé qui, par une opération de mécénat, offrit cette statue à l’Institut de France.
A la fin du XIXe siècle, le dernier propriétaire des grandes écuries, le duc d’Aumale, cinquième fils du roi Louis-Philippe, lègue son domaine (château, hippodrome, écuries, forêt, musée Condé..) en 1886 à l’Institut de France à la condition que tout soit maintenu en l’état.
